Planning and Zoning Commission Tables Balfour School Rezoning
URGENT UPDATE: The Planning and Zoning Commission in Thomasville has just announced that they will table the rezoning request for the former Balfour School campus, a decision made during a heated meeting on January 5, 2026. The packed audience voiced strong concerns over the proposed change from R-1 (Single Family Residential) to R-2 (Conditional Use – Multi-Family/Group Development).
The rezoning would allow for the transformation of the historic school located at 201 Chatham Drive into multi-family housing. City Planner Kenny Thompson explained that while the school was previously designated R-1, it is not residential. The surrounding areas have mixed zoning, raising questions about the impact of such a significant change.
Residents expressed their apprehensions about the proposal, emphasizing the need for more detailed plans from the developer, Thomasville Community Development Corporation. Concerns were raised that the request could open the door for future developments that may not align with the community’s character.
Resident Ian Quinton highlighted the uncertainty, stating, “There’s no necessity for the developer at this point to give us more than just the site plan… you don’t really know how this property is being developed.” Another local, Charlene Fredrick, recalled past proposals for transitional apartments at the site, questioning what could happen if this current project does not go through.
Amidst the public outcry, Board member Sam Fink made a motion to table the discussion, emphasizing that more information was needed before a proper decision could be made. He proposed holding a workshop within the next two weeks to further explore the conditional use rezoning. The item will be placed back on the agenda for the next Board meeting, leaving the future of the Balfour School in limbo.
As this situation develops, residents are left anxiously awaiting further details on the proposed plans. The outcome could have significant implications for the character and zoning of their neighborhood, and many are eager for clarity and transparency from the Commission.
Stay tuned for updates as the community continues to engage with officials over this critical decision.
