Guest violinist Augustin Hadelich, a Grammy-winning artist renowned for his exceptional technique and emotional interpretations, will take center stage to perform this masterpiece. Hadelich describes the concerto as a piece with “two faces,” starting tenderly before transitioning into an exhilarating finale. “The last movement is quite relentless,” he stated. “It starts right away and you have to be suddenly hyper-focused.”
This concert also features Mahler’s 4th Symphony, creating a compelling program that showcases the rich history of the Philadelphia Orchestra. The concert will be conducted by Dalia Stasevska, a Ukrainian-born Finnish conductor known for her dynamic style. This collaboration brings a fresh energy to Barber’s concerto, which is celebrated for its lyrical melodies and vibrant contrasts. The piece is often described as a blend of beautiful, singable tunes and thrilling, fast-paced sections, ensuring a captivating experience for the audience.
Hadelich noted the emotional depth of the second movement, calling it “unbelievably beautiful” and likening the experience to being in a dream. As for the final movement, he emphasized the technical demands it places on the performer, making it a unique challenge compared to the other sections.
