BREAKING NEWS: Phil Olivier, an influential educator and cherished community member, has passed away peacefully at the age of 87 in Santa Cruz, California. He died early in the morning on December 1, 2025, after battling a long illness, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and inspiration.

Born on August 16, 1937, in San Francisco, Olivier was raised in Berkeley and graduated from UC Berkeley with degrees in sociology and education. His teaching career began at Kensington School, where he met his wife, Kaye. In 1968, the family relocated to Santa Cruz, where Olivier dedicated nearly three decades to shaping young minds at Bradley School in Corralitos.

Olivier was not just an educator; he was a passionate musician, known for his remarkable bass baritone voice. He sang in various choruses throughout his life, including an impressive 30 years with the Cabrillo Chorus, filling his home with music and joy. His artistic talents extended to photography and writing, showcasing his love for nature as an enthusiastic hiker and naturalist.

Phil and Kaye shared countless adventures, camping across the western United States and exploring the Sierra Nevada mountains each summer. These experiences created a deep bond within their family, which included sons Scot and Jordan, daughter Robin, and numerous grandchildren. His zest for life was infectious; gatherings for birthdays and holidays were filled with laughter, a testament to his vibrant spirit.

The Olivier family expressed immense gratitude to Dr. Adam Yarme, Hospice of Santa Cruz County, and caregiver Cameron for their compassionate support during Phil’s final days.

A memorial service will be held at St John’s Episcopal Church in Aptos on January 10 at 1:00 PM, followed by a reception in the parish hall. Friends and family are encouraged to honor Phil’s memory with donations to the Hospice of Santa Cruz County, the Alzheimer’s Association, or the SPCA of Santa Cruz County.

Phil Olivier’s remarkable journey has touched the lives of many, and while he will be deeply missed, his spirit and legacy will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him. As the community mourns this loss, they also celebrate a life rich with experiences, love, and laughter.
