Perth Stadium to Host Rugby World Cup Opener on Oct. 1, 2027

BREAKING: Perth Stadium in Western Australia will host the opening match of the eagerly anticipated 2027 Rugby World Cup on October 1, 2027. The match will feature the Wallabies against a yet-to-be-determined opponent, setting the stage for a thrilling six-week tournament that culminates in the final at Sydney’s Olympic Stadium on November 13, 2027.
This historic announcement comes as rugby fans worldwide prepare for the tournament’s expansion to include 24 teams, a move that underscores the sport’s growing global appeal. Tournament officials have confirmed that the draw to determine pool stage opponents will take place via live video link on December 3, 2023.
The competition will feature six pools of four teams each. The men’s rankings following the November internationals will create four bands, which will be randomly drawn into Pools A, B, C, D, E, and F. From these pools, the top two teams, along with the four best third-place teams, will advance to the knockout stage, significantly increasing the number of teams competing beyond the traditional format.
As of now, 23 teams have secured their spots, with the final qualification round set to occur in Dubai from November 8-18. Samoa still has a fighting chance to claim the last place through a playoff that includes Belgium, Namibia, and either Brazil or Paraguay.
World Rugby Chairman Brett Robinson heralded this expansion as a “landmark moment for our sport,” emphasizing that it brings “more nations, more matches, and more opportunities for fans around the world to connect with rugby.”
As excitement builds for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, fans are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates on team qualifications and tournament logistics. With the draw just weeks away, the global rugby community is preparing for what promises to be an unforgettable celebration of the sport.
