Perham Yellowjackets Overwhelm WDC, Hand Wolverines First Loss
UPDATE: In a thrilling Section 8AA showdown, the Perham Yellowjackets defeated the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines 74-53 on December 18, 2025, handing WDC their first loss of the season. With blizzard-like conditions outside, the intensity inside The Hive reached a boiling point as Perham’s depth and relentless energy proved too much for the Wolverines.
The Yellowjackets (7-1) surged in the second half, scoring 41 points to secure the victory. “I think one of our strengths is our energy,” said Perham head coach TJ Super. “When we’re down, we chip away at leads and go on runs. The crowd feeds off our energy, and it helps us out a lot.”
Wadena-Deer Creek (5-1) started strong, taking an early 16-6 lead, but Perham’s depth began to shine. Key plays from seventh-grader Claire Pilgrim and freshman Quinn Hanson, who finished with a season-high 16 points, turned the tide. “Those threes at the end of the first half were really big,” Super noted.
As the game progressed, WDC struggled to keep up with Perham’s relentless pressure and defensive prowess. The Yellowjackets outscored the Wolverines 19-9 in the final seven minutes, showcasing their ability to capitalize on turnovers and fatigue.
“Defensively, it didn’t seem like we gave up 74 just because of how hard our girls were playing,” said WDC head coach Jordan Cresap. “But a couple of lapses equal big deficits.” The Wolverines were missing senior guard Jada Dykhoff, and Cresap acknowledged her absence impacted the game. “We missed her leadership and scoring ability,” he admitted.
Perham’s success stemmed from a well-rounded team effort, with nine players scoring throughout the game. Notable performances included Kaia Anderson with 12 points and Addy Draeger contributing 11 points.
The Yellowjackets’ strategy of utilizing multiple players allowed them to maintain a high energy level, overwhelming their opponents. “It wears on you,” Cresap acknowledged about Perham’s relentless style.
The game was not just a test of skills but a chance for growth for both teams. “We learned a lot playing a strong team like Perham,” Cresap remarked. “They make you work on both ends of the court.”
As the season progresses, both teams look to build on this experience. Perham will host Staples-Motley, while WDC faces Thief River Falls next. The showdown on December 18 will be remembered as a critical learning moment for the Wolverines and a testament to the Yellowjackets’ depth and determination.
This victory marks a pivotal moment for Perham, setting the tone for the rest of the season as they strive to remain competitive in Section 8AA. Fans and players alike are eager to see how this momentum carries forward.
