Parkston Rays Surge Past Angels, Advance to Class B Title Game

UPDATE: The Parkston Rays have achieved a stunning victory, defeating their Sunshine League rivals, the Alexandria Angels, with a decisive 7-2 score in the Class B state amateur baseball semifinals on Saturday night. This win propels the Rays into the championship game, marking their first appearance in the state tournament.
This thrilling match took place in Brandon as the Rays, now boasting a record of 19-9, scored six runs in the first three innings, establishing a commanding lead that they maintained throughout the game. The championship showdown is set for 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, where the Rays will face either the Castlewood Ravens or the Hartford/Humboldt Gamecocks. No matter the outcome, one team will claim the championship title for the first time.
Parkston’s Jake Helleloid delivered an impressive performance, securing his second complete-game win of the tournament. He allowed only seven hits and two runs while striking out six batters on 107 pitches.
The Rays took an early lead with a crafty play in the first inning. After Seth Muth hit a double, he advanced to third and scored during a rundown involving James Deckert, leaving the Angels unable to secure an out. Alexandria responded quickly, tying the score with a Jerrod Zens triple and an RBI single from Cole Wenande. However, the Rays retaliated with a two-run rally, including an RBI single from Tanner Dyk, which set the stage for a commanding 4-1 lead.
