Over 1,300 Students Attend Urgent Future First Careers Expo
UPDATE: A major careers event, the Future First Careers Expo, just concluded, attracting over 1,300 students eager to shape their futures. Held on November 13, 2023, at The Lady Eastwood Centre in Newark, this annual expo is a crucial opportunity for young people from Year 11 to 13 to explore diverse career paths.
The event, organized by Newark and Sherwood District Council in partnership with the Lincoln College Group, showcased more than 50 exhibitors, including local employers, national companies, universities, and training providers. Students interacted with representatives from major brands like Barclays, Currys, and Boots, alongside the British Armed Forces and local police services.
Attendees gained firsthand insights into potential apprenticeships, vocational courses, and emerging industries. The expo aimed to connect students directly with employers and educational institutions, providing them with vital information to navigate their post-16 and post-18 options.
Councillor Claire Penny, the portfolio holder for Sustainable Economic Development at Newark and Sherwood District Council, emphasized the event’s impact: “The Future First Careers Expo continues to be one of the most impactful events in our calendar. It empowers young people in our area to make informed decisions about their careers.”
The enthusiasm from students was palpable. According to John Trevatt, careers leader at Magnus Church of England Academy, “The engagement with employers and exploration of diverse career pathways from STEM to Creative Arts opened their eyes to vast opportunities.”
Launched in 2017, the expo is part of ongoing efforts to enhance social mobility and ensure that all young people in the district have access to achievable career pathways. By raising aspirations and connecting students with potential employers, this event is shaping the future workforce of the region.
As the Future First Careers Expo wraps up, the focus remains on the valuable insights gained by students and the connections made. This year’s event illustrates the growing importance of career guidance in an evolving job market. Stay tuned for more updates on upcoming educational initiatives in the area.
