URGENT UPDATE: The Oklahoma Department of Tourism and Recreation (OTRD) has reached a conditional agreement allowing Lookout Kitchen restaurants in state parks to reopen following a significant payment dispute. This development comes just in time for the summer vacation season, ensuring essential dining services return to popular outdoor destinations.
On July 8, OTRD announced the suspension of restaurant operations across all six Lookout Kitchen locations due to the operator’s failure to meet financial obligations, including a debt of $254,943.52 in overdue payments and an additional $500,000 related to a letter of credit. This abrupt halt was triggered by what officials termed “repeated failures” to comply with contractual terms.
In a surprising turn, Lookout Kitchen responded on social media, expressing disappointment with the OTRD’s actions and asserting they had “fully complied” with requests. This back-and-forth raised concerns among park visitors and local communities reliant on these restaurants for meals and jobs.
On July 14, OTRD confirmed a breakthrough: a payment plan was established to facilitate the reopening of the restaurants. The first location, Lake Murray State Park, will open its doors again on July 15 at 8:00 AM, offering a full breakfast service. Additional locations in Beavers Bend, Quartz Mountain, Robbers Cave, and Roman Nose state parks are set to welcome guests again on July 19 at 11:00 AM.
The new agreement stipulates a series of monthly payments to settle the outstanding debt of $274,585.88, with Lookout Kitchen already making an initial payment of $65,000 on July 14. OTRD Executive Director Sterling Zearley stated that this arrangement is a positive step for both the state park visitors and the restaurant operator, emphasizing the importance of minimizing disruptions to park operations.
Rep. Tammy Townley, chair of the House committee on tourism, expressed optimism about the future of Lookout Kitchen, stating, “Everything is being done to ensure they are successful and do not fall back into financial challenges.” Her remarks highlight the commitment of local officials to support businesses that contribute to Oklahoma’s tourism.
