Oklahoma City House District 92 Special Election Set for June 2024

URGENT UPDATE: Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt has just announced special election dates to fill the vacant seat in House District 92, previously occupied by Rep. Forrest Bennett, who resigned to lead the Oklahoma State AFL-CIO. This significant political move means voters in central and downtown Oklahoma City will face two races for the same seat in June 2024.

The special primary election is scheduled for June 16, 2024, coinciding with the upcoming general election for the same district. This unusual overlap allows for a unique situation where candidates can run in both elections. According to Misha Mohr, spokesperson for the Oklahoma Election Board, “Our interpretation of state law is that a candidate may run in both the regular and special election because, in this case, it is for the same office.”

The implications of this dual election are profound. The candidate who wins the special election will fill the remainder of Bennett’s term, while the victor of the regular election will serve the full two-year term. However, if the same candidate emerges victorious in both elections, they will effectively serve a longer term, combining both the remainder of Bennett’s term and the new full term.

Candidates interested in running for this pivotal House seat must file their nominations between April 1 and April 3, 2024. If a runoff primary is necessary, it will take place on August 25, 2024. The special general election is set for November 3, 2024. If there are no runoffs, the general election could be held as early as late August.

This special election marks a critical moment for Oklahomans, as it will determine representation in a key district, affecting local legislation and community interests. As the political landscape shifts, many are closely watching who will emerge as candidates and how this might influence voter turnout.

Residents are urged to stay updated on the unfolding situation as the election dates approach, making this a pivotal point for engagement in local governance.
