Nora E. Larabee Library Restoration Completed Ahead of Oktoberfest

BREAKING: The Nora E. Larabee Memorial Library has officially completed its extensive restoration projects, just in time for the highly anticipated Oktoberfest celebrations. This exciting development, announced earlier today, comes as part of the library’s initiative funded by the 2024 Heritage Trust Fund Grant, which covered a staggering 80% of the restoration costs.
The restoration included the meticulous renovation of every window in the building, both upstairs and downstairs. This crucial work secures the library’s structural integrity while preserving its historic charm, a vital aspect for the community and its visitors. The project involved the restoration of three basement windows and five stained-glass panels framing Nora’s portrait window, facilitated by the expertise of Scott Hoefer.
In addition to the window restoration, a generous $5,000 grant from the Golden Belt Community Foundation was utilized to install remote-controlled roller shades on the west windows, drastically reducing afternoon glare and enhancing visitor comfort. Local experts from Millers of Claflin provided essential guidance and installation services.
The library’s exterior has also seen significant upgrades. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of local volunteers, including JC Smith and Bob Minks, the landscaping is flourishing, with buffalo and blue grama grass thriving in its second year. A new flagpole proudly displays the U.S. flag 24/7 in memory of beloved patron Tim Dye.
A dedication ceremony is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 4, during Oktoberfest, celebrating the community’s collective effort in preserving this treasured public space. The improvements extend beyond aesthetics, with a newly relocated metal library sign now visible from Broadway and a newly installed lamppost to ensure safer entry for all visitors.
The Preserving Nora’s Legacy Committee continues to seek funding for future projects, emphasizing that community generosity is the backbone of these initiatives. To support ongoing improvements, donors are encouraged to contribute $100 or more to inscribe a “book” on the Wall of Giving. For details, interested parties can contact Gerry Hildebrand at the library or Nancy Hildebrand via email at [email protected].
Library-themed merchandise, including mugs and tote bags, is also available for suggested donations, with all proceeds dedicated to further enhancements of the library. The library board and staff express their heartfelt thanks to everyone who has contributed to this vital community resource, ensuring its legacy for generations to come.
Stay tuned for more updates as the dedication ceremony approaches, and join in celebrating this remarkable achievement for the Nora E. Larabee Memorial Library!
