Newton Girls Tennis Team Places Sixth at LHC Tournament

UPDATE: The Newton girls tennis team faced a tough challenge at the Little Hawkeye Conference (LHC) tournament on June 15, 2023, finishing in sixth place among seven teams with just 16 points. Competing without their No. 1 player, the Cardinals managed to secure only one victory during the day.
Despite the setback, seniors Ava Williams and Camryn Andrew showcased their skills by winning their quarterfinal match in the Flight 2 doubles bracket. They defeated Kylie Owens and Addison Landers of Oskaloosa with a decisive score of 6-3, 6-3. However, the duo’s journey ended in the semifinals against the eventual champions, Pella, and they subsequently lost the third-place match to Pella Christian, finishing fourth in their bracket.
In other doubles action, seniors Brooklyn Sterling and Sloan Brodersen competed fiercely in the Flight 1 doubles category but ultimately placed sixth after falling to the fourth-seeded team from Dallas Center-Grimes and losing the fifth-place match against Pella Christian.
The singles competitors faced their own challenges, with Kaetlin McPartlin and Makenzie Clark both finishing sixth in their respective brackets. McPartlin, seeded fifth, lost in the quarterfinals to Pella’s Ellie Smock, while Clark, the fourth seed, dropped her quarterfinal match to fifth-seeded Lexi Branderhorst of Pella Christian.
The tournament concluded with Class 1A No. 3 Pella dominating the competition, securing the conference championship with 46 points. Indianola, Pella Christian, and Norwalk tied for second place, each with 36 points. Dallas Center-Grimes finished fifth with 18 points, while Oskaloosa trailed Newton in seventh with just 10 points.
