Newton Girls Swimming Dominates Centerville with 129-16 Victory

URGENT UPDATE: The Newton girls swim team delivered a stunning performance at home, overpowering Centerville with an astounding score of 129-16 during their matchup on July 15, 2025, at the Newton YMCA. This decisive victory came as the Cardinals showcased their dominance by winning all 11 events.
In a remarkable display of talent, Tori White narrowly missed her own backstroke record, finishing just 0.4 seconds shy. Team captain Harper Barton also shined, leading her team to victory in four events, including both the 200- and 400-meter freestyle relays.
The evening concluded with a spectacular 1-2 finish in the 400 freestyle relay. The winning team, composed of Reid McCloud, White, Temple Barton, and Harper Barton, clocked in at 4 minutes, 27.74 seconds. Their runner-up counterparts, Kimberlee Miller, Torrie Van Kley, Brilea Moffitt, and Peyton Phillips, finished with a time of 5:32.74.
The Newton squad also triumphed in the 200 freestyle relay, where the same quartet took home gold, although official results listed an inaccurate time. Additionally, Emalee Weuve, Alexa Van Maanen, Julia Nedder, and Moffitt won the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:29.58, securing a 1-2 finish as Madison Scott, Van Kley, Nilaya McConnell, and Josalyn Cervantes came in second at 2:58.38.
Barton claimed victory in the 50 freestyle with a time of 28.67 seconds and added another win in the 100 freestyle at 1:02.14. White excelled in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:46.09 and won the 100 backstroke in 1:10.75, just shy of her previous school record.
The Cardinals dominated several events, finishing 1-2-3 in the 100 butterfly, 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, and 400 freestyle. In the 100 butterfly, Nedder led with a time of 1:18.03, while McConnell and Amiya Amos followed closely behind.
