Newark Swimming Club Receives Urgent Funding for New Training Blocks

URGENT UPDATE: Newark Swimming Club is set to elevate its training standards thanks to a vital funding boost from the Newark and Sherwood District Council. The funding will secure new competition-level starting blocks for the main pool at Newark Sports and Fitness Centre, allowing the club to train at national standards.
This critical investment is part of the council’s ongoing commitment to supporting grassroots sports and enhancing access to high-quality facilities for residents. The funding aims to help young athletes pursue competitive and potentially professional sporting careers, impacting the local community significantly.
The new starting blocks are already making waves. Councillor Susan Crosby, portfolio holder for Health, Wellbeing and Leisure, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “We’re delighted to support Active4Today and Newark Swimming with this funding. I met with Newark Swimming Club whose members will be using the blocks, and it was brilliant hearing about all of the success of the club in recent years.”
The club has a rich history, established in 1935, and has seen remarkable success, with swimmers earning accolades at both regional and national levels. With over 180 members, Newark Swimming Club remains fully inclusive, welcoming individuals of all ages and abilities, and continues to nurture talent within the community.
Head coach Adam McIntyre highlighted the immediate impact of the funding, noting, “The diving blocks have already had such a massive impact on our swimmers, even though we’ve only had them for a couple of sessions. It allows our swimmers to train with the equipment they’ll use in races at most other pools, giving them the best possible chance of being successful.”
This initiative not only enhances training but also builds confidence among young swimmers. Councillor Crosby shared an inspiring story about a young boy who began swimming at age 8 and has now progressed to compete at County level. “I hope these new starting blocks will help more swimmers train to competition standards,” she added.
The support from Newark and Sherwood District Council underscores the vital role sports clubs play in fostering health and community engagement. As Newark Swimming Club continues to thrive, the council remains committed to providing opportunities for local residents to flourish and grow in their sporting endeavors.
