UPDATE: New York City’s subway system faced significant disruptions this morning due to severe flooding caused by heavy rain that swept through the Northeast overnight. As of Tuesday, multiple subway lines are experiencing delays and suspensions, impacting thousands of commuters.

Heavy rain began inundating the region on Monday evening, triggering flash floods that extended across New Jersey and New York. Streets and public transit systems are grappling with the aftermath. While the subway was operational early Tuesday, reports confirmed that services on the 1, 2, and 3 lines were temporarily suspended due to flooding at various stations, including the 28th Street Station in Manhattan, where alarming footage shows water cascading onto the platform.

Authorities from the MTA reported significant disruptions affecting the E, F, M, R, and No. 6 lines. Additionally, the Staten Island Railway was halted between Huguenot and Tottenville due to similar flooding conditions.

Air travel has also been severely impacted, with over 159 flight cancellations reported at Newark Liberty Airport alone, according to FlightAware. Travelers should prepare for ongoing delays as conditions stabilize.

While flash flood warnings have largely expired across New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, a state of emergency remains in effect in New Jersey, as declared by Gov. Phil Murphy. Videos circulating on social media depict cars submerged in floodwaters, with residents urgently working to clean up their properties.

The heavy rain has also led to delays on parts of New Jersey’s commuter rail lines. In a shocking incident, a house in North Plainfield, New Jersey, caught fire and collapsed shortly after the family evacuated, prompting investigations into a possible explosion.

As the storm system moves out of the area, residents and transit authorities are left to assess the damage and respond to the ongoing challenges. Commuters are advised to monitor transit updates closely as services work to resume full operations.
