New Velvet Bookmark Bookstore Opens in Great Bend with Ribbon-Cutting
URGENT UPDATE: The Velvet Bookmark, a new niche bookstore specializing in romance novels, officially opened its doors today in Great Bend, Kansas. Located inside The Beauty Bar at 1409 Main St., the store celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony following the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Coffee event at the Prince of Peace Parish Center.
Just announced: The Golden Belt Community Foundation revealed that this year’s Giving Tuesday campaign raised nearly $1 million for local nonprofit organizations, further highlighting the community’s commitment to supporting local initiatives.
The Velvet Bookmark, co-owned by Megan Barfield and Shelly Peacock, aims to create a cozy reading haven for romance novel enthusiasts. The store’s hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, with extended hours on select evenings and Saturdays. Notably, they will be open on Monday, Dec. 22, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a special event.
Barfield, who also serves as the Chamber president and CEO, expressed enthusiasm for the opening, saying, “The Velvet Bookmark is not just a store; it’s a community space where readers can connect and explore new worlds.”
In conjunction with the store’s opening, the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce is hosting “Cups of Cheer” on Dec. 22-23. This festive event invites locals to enjoy complimentary coffee, hot cocoa, and cookies at the Chamber board room located at 1125 Williams St. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The initiative aims to foster community connections during the busy holiday season.
Barfield encourages newcomers to Great Bend to pick up a free Relocation Packet during their visit.
