New Outdoor Basketball Court Nears Completion in Great Bend
UPDATE: The new outdoor basketball court at Eisenhower School in Great Bend is almost ready for action, with vibrant red and black colors now visible and lines being painted on the court. This exciting development comes as officials from the Great Bend Recreation Commission (GBRC) report significant progress on the project, which is set to enhance local community engagement in sports.
During a board meeting earlier today, GBRC Executive Director Chris Umphres confirmed that crews are finalizing the court’s details. “They’re putting lines down and hope to finish up tomorrow before the rain,” Umphres stated. The court, surrounded by a 10-foot tall black chain-link fence, will feature adjustable goals, shade structures, picnic tables, and more. A grand opening celebration is yet to be scheduled, promising an exhilarating addition to the community.
The basketball court is a collaborative effort involving GBRC, USD 428, and the Kiwanis Club, with additional funding from various local businesses and individuals. Donors will be recognized on a plaque at the facility, highlighting the community’s commitment to enhancing recreational facilities.
In tandem with this project, GBRC is making strides towards reopening the long-anticipated Stone Ridge Golf Course, which has been closed since 2022. The commission voted to partner with KemperSports, a reputable golf course management company, to move forward with plans for a new 18-hole public golf course. This initiative aims to attract visitors and boost local tourism.
Umphres shared updates on the golf course during the meeting, stating, “We want to make sure that this is for the long haul and not just open it and have it fail again.” The partnership with KemperSports includes hiring a golf course architect to design an upgraded facility, with plans expected to be finalized by the end of the year. The architect’s fee is projected at $35,000 plus travel expenses.
The community has expressed enthusiasm for the golf course’s reopening, with many eager to see it come to fruition. The GBRC is committed to ensuring that the new design meets modern standards and enhances the golfing experience for all.
In addition to the basketball and golf projects, GBRC is also enhancing the local dog park. Wellness Director Megan Hammeke announced that interactive equipment for dogs will soon be added, including a tug-of-war feature and agility obstacles.
