New Jersey Expands Utility Bill Assistance Amid Rising Costs

URGENT UPDATE: New Jersey’s Board of Public Utilities (BPU) has just announced a significant expansion of its Universal Service Fund (USF), providing immediate relief for residents struggling to pay their utility bills. This expansion is crucial as utility costs continue to surge, impacting countless households across the state.
The USF program now guarantees participants will pay no more than 6% of their annual income on gas and electric services. The BPU has increased the minimum monthly credits to $20 and the maximum combined benefit to $200 per month. More than 100,000 households will benefit from this expansion, with many seeing immediate assistance.
BPU President Christine Guhl-Sadovy emphasized the importance of this program, stating, “We have expanded the program to provide higher bill credits to customers who need it. It’s open to anyone who is at or below 60% of the state median income, so for a family of four, that’s about $92,000 a year.” The streamlined application process also includes mandatory outreach to eligible households, ensuring more residents are enrolled in necessary assistance programs.
This critical announcement comes as many New Jerseyans face escalating utility bills, with residents like Luz Garcia, 69, expressing their struggles. Through a translator, Garcia revealed she earns just $400 a month while her utility bill has skyrocketed to $700, leaving her desperate for support.
At a recent event at the Boys and Girls Club of Passaic County, officials, including Passaic Mayor Hector Lora, highlighted the urgency of in-person outreach. “Today is a beautiful day in the City of Passaic, but we know cold days are ahead. The concern is so big in the minds of the residents of our city. Will they keep the light on? Will they have heat?” Lora stated, underscoring the pressing need for assistance.
With the BPU’s commitment to expanding the USF, utility assistance programs will soon reach other counties, including Asbury Park and Jersey City. The urgency for help is evident, as residents navigate the challenging landscape of rising costs and financial uncertainty.
