UPDATE: November marks the start of National Family Literacy Month, an initiative designed to inspire families to engage in reading together. This year, it’s more urgent than ever as experts highlight the profound impact of parental involvement on children’s educational success.

National Family Literacy Day® has been celebrated since 1994, thanks to efforts by the National Center for Families Learning (NCFL). This annual observance encourages families to read together and utilize available resources to foster literacy skills in children. The significance of this month cannot be overstated; it lays the groundwork for a child’s lifelong learning journey.

Recent studies reveal that children who are read to regularly develop stronger literacy and fine motor skills. Engaging with books from a young age not only prepares them for school but also enhances their cognitive and emotional development. Authorities confirm that exposing children to literature—even prenatally—can significantly aid their growth.

Monique Koerner, the Family and Community Wellness Agent with K-State Research and Extension, emphasizes the importance of integrating reading into daily routines. “Creating a reading habit is essential,” she states. “It doesn’t have to be a formal session; even casual interactions with books can have lasting benefits.”

Families are encouraged to explore programs like Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which provides free age-appropriate books to children from birth to age five. This initiative sends new books directly to enrolled children each month, creating excitement and anticipation. The program is currently available in Ellis and Barton County, Kansas.

To participate or learn more, families can contact local resources:
United Way of Central Kansas: 1409 Williams Street, Great Bend, KS 67530, Phone: 620-792-2409, Email: [email protected]
Ellis County Imagination Library: 2501 E 13th Street, Hays, KS 67601, Phone: 785-623-2430, Email: [email protected]

This month is a call to action for families to prioritize reading and making it an integral part of their lives. The emotional benefits of reading together, such as bonding and creating cherished memories, cannot be overlooked.

As National Family Literacy Month unfolds, families are urged to take advantage of community resources, library programs, and special events aimed at promoting literacy. The time to act is now—join the movement and help shape a brighter future for children through the power of reading!
