Motorist Jailed After Fatal Collision with Social Worker, 33

UPDATE: A motorist has been sentenced to 15 months in prison after a tragic collision that claimed the life of 33-year-old social worker Sarah Fensom. The incident, which took place on September 12, 2023, highlights the dangers of reckless driving under poor conditions.
During a court hearing at Nottingham Crown Court, it was revealed that Lee Horsley, a 31-year-old car mechanic from Hazel Road, Ollerton, lost control of his highly modified BMW while attempting a dangerous overtaking maneuver on the A614 Old Rufford Road in Farnsfield. The BMW, capable of producing 397 brake horsepower, collided head-on with Ms. Fensom’s Audi, resulting in catastrophic injuries.
Despite the immediate response from bystanders and medical personnel, Ms. Fensom succumbed to her injuries three days after the accident, suffering from severe spinal and neck injuries. This tragic loss has resonated deeply within the community, as she was known as a dedicated social worker and a beloved friend.
Detective Sergeant Paul Clark from Nottinghamshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit described the modified BMW as a “wolf in sheep’s clothing.” He condemned Horsley’s reckless behavior, stating, “Mr. Horsley was aware of the immense power going through the rear axle and wheels. Any competent motorist would have adapted to the weather conditions and refrained from such maneuvers.”
Horsley pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving and has also been banned from driving for three years and seven months. After the sentencing, DS Clark expressed condolences to Ms. Fensom’s family, commending their strength throughout the legal proceedings.
As the investigation concludes, authorities are urging motorists to exercise caution, especially in adverse weather conditions. “Adjust your speed and distance to match the road conditions,” DS Clark warned. “Refrain from making sharp maneuvers, particularly when visibility and traction are compromised.”
This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with aggressive driving. The community mourns the loss of a vibrant life cut short by carelessness, emphasizing the need for greater road safety awareness.
