UPDATE: Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred has expressed increasing confidence that MLB players will participate in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This announcement comes ahead of the World Series Game 2, as discussions intensify around the logistics of player involvement.

In a significant shift from the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, where players on 40-man rosters were not allowed to compete, MLB is now exploring ways to facilitate participation in the Los Angeles Games scheduled for July 14-30, 2028. The league is considering an extended All-Star break to accommodate athletes.

“I am positive about it. I think that the owners have kind of crossed the line in terms of, we’d like to do it if we can possibly make it work,” Manfred stated. However, he acknowledged that there are still logistical challenges to address before making a final decision.

The Tokyo Olympic baseball tournament was compressed into an 11-day schedule, featuring a four-day group stage followed by knockout rounds. The format for Los Angeles is expected to be similarly condensed, allowing for efficient competition.

Participation in the 2028 Olympics is anticipated to be a unique opportunity for MLB players, as the 2032 Olympics are set to take place in Brisbane, Australia. Manfred noted, “The chances that we’re playing in Brisbane are even more difficult than being in LA.”

This potential participation is a crucial development for fans and players alike, reigniting the passion for baseball on an international stage. As negotiations continue with the players’ association and sponsors, the anticipation builds for what could be a historic moment for Major League Baseball.

With the 2028 Olympics approaching rapidly, all eyes are on MLB and its ability to finalize arrangements that could see its brightest stars shine on an Olympic platform. Expect more updates as details unfold in the coming days.
