Missionaries of Charity Depart Norristown for Urgent Kensington Outreach
BREAKING: The Missionaries of Charity have officially left their Norristown convent after over 40 years, redirecting their efforts toward the urgent needs of Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood. This significant transition was announced just last month in a heartfelt letter from Sister Marcella MC to Rev. Matthew Brody and the Saint Patrick Church community.
In her statement, Sister Marcella expressed profound gratitude for the support received during their time in Norristown. “We cherish the bonds we share with you,” she conveyed, emphasizing their appreciation for the love and generosity from volunteers and benefactors.
The Missionaries of Charity first established their presence in Norristown in 1984, when St. Teresa of Calcutta, also known as Mother Teresa, opened the convent. Operating out of 630 DeKalb St., the order has provided vital services including a soup kitchen, a women’s shelter, and Sunday school programs.
Rev. Brody acknowledged the sisters’ unwavering commitment to the local community, stating, “Their steadfast and sacrificial service to the poor and needy has been invaluable.” He highlighted their decision, made after much prayer and reflection, to close the Norristown convent due to challenges in maintaining their large facility.
“Our hearts remain deeply united with Norristown,” Sister Marcella stated, revealing that the move stems from a desire for “a simpler way of life that allows us to reach the poorest more directly.” The sisters will now focus on opening a new outreach center in Kensington, merging their existing efforts from Norristown and Chester.
As the Missionaries prepare for this new chapter, Rev. Brody expressed his heartfelt gratitude and support in a letter to parishioners, affirming, “We remain united with you in Christ.” He reassured the sisters of the parish’s prayers as they embark on this essential mission to serve the most vulnerable populations in Kensington.
This urgent outreach comes at a critical time, as Kensington faces heightened challenges and an increased need for assistance. The Missionaries of Charity’s relocation is not just a change of address; it signifies a renewed commitment to addressing the pressing needs of the community.
