Mesai Alonsabe’s Toy Drive Surges to 200+ Gifts for Vallejo Kids
URGENT UPDATE: Mesai Alonsabe’s annual toy drive is set to exceed 200 toys for less fortunate children in Vallejo, California, as the event gears up this December. The drive, which started from humble beginnings, has transformed into a vital community effort over the past eleven years, showcasing the power of giving.
Just last Saturday, December 2, 2023, at Java Jax café, Alonsabe, now 17 years old and a senior at Jesse Bethel High School, confirmed that the toy drive will continue, regardless of his college plans. “No, this is going to keep going,” Alonsabe declared. “I’m always going to be giving back to Vallejo, the city that has raised me.”
The toy drive began in 2014 when Alonsabe, then just six years old, initiated a small collection effort with the Vallejo Fire Department, distributing around 15 to 20 toys. Fast forward to this year, and the drive is on track to deliver at least 200 gifts, thanks to ongoing online contributions and support from local organizations like Vallejo Together.
“We’re motivated to keep this going,” said Alonsabe’s mother, Michelle Alonsabe-Davis. “Mesai doesn’t know where he is going to college yet, but even if he goes far away, my husband and I are dedicated to helping him out.”
The toy drive’s location has shifted over the years, now taking place at Java Jax during the bustling Farmers Market, making it a prime spot for community engagement. “People are going in and out of the Farmers Market, and we’ve seen great support from passersby,” Michelle added.
Alonsabe reflected on the journey, saying, “Eleven years have passed by fast, but I don’t see myself doing this without the help of a lot of people.” The event has grown not only in size but also in community involvement, with groups like the Willie B. Adkins Scholars Program stepping in to assist.
As December progresses, community members are encouraged to donate toys that range from plush animals to board games. The first toy ever donated was a Barbie doll, and this year, Mesai is particularly fond of the stress-relieving Jelly Blox toy.
In a time when many families face hardships, Alonsabe’s efforts serve as a beacon of hope. “This event has helped in the way people look at me as a young man who wants to be successful,” he stated. His inspiration comes from figures like Barack Obama and his mother, who have shaped his vision for the future.
This toy drive not only brings joy to children but also fosters a sense of community and togetherness in Vallejo. For those looking to contribute, visit Mesai Alonsabe’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/TurboSai/ for more information on donations.
What’s Next: The toy drive will continue to accept donations throughout December, culminating in a distribution event where toys will be wrapped and given to children at various venues, ensuring that the spirit of giving thrives this holiday season.
