BREAKING: Mason Wilhelm, the son of Hall of Fame Buckeye Matt Wilhelm, is set to officially join Ohio State’s football program on December 3, 2023. This announcement marks a significant moment in the family’s athletic legacy, as Mason steps into the spotlight as a three-star offensive lineman.

The commitment comes amid intense competition, with Mason determined to carve his own path at Ohio State. “I do not want to be known as Matt Wilhelm’s son. I want to create a name for myself,” he declared, emphasizing his desire to earn this opportunity on his own merit.

Mason Wilhelm, a resident of Westlake, has deep ties to Ohio State through his father, who celebrated a storied career with the Buckeyes, culminating in a 2002 national championship and a Super Bowl victory with the Green Bay Packers. “We knew what Ohio State represents,” Matt Wilhelm said, underscoring the family’s commitment to hard work and integrity in their athletic journey.

Mason’s recruitment gained traction despite an initial commitment to North Carolina. After Ohio State’s offensive line coach, Tyler Bowen, extended an offer, Mason quickly shifted his focus. During a recent visit to Ohio State, he experienced the thrill of being part of the Buckeye community. “Watching the team run onto the field… knowing that he is going to wear that uniform… was very surreal for me,” said Matt Wilhelm.

As a former Elyria Catholic standout and 1998 Lorain County Golden Helmet Award winner, Matt has been heavily involved in Mason’s development both on and off the field. He has taken on the role of defensive line coach at St. Edward’s, where he shares the field with his son, further adding to the family’s football narrative. “The opportunity that I am most grateful for is to be close to Mason and watch him,” he said.

Mason’s commitment to Ohio State is part of a broader trend, as several top recruits have recently flipped to the Buckeyes, attracted by the program’s success and player development. “What Ohio State is doing in their program is developing,” Mason noted, referencing the team’s recent national championship and the influx of talent.

As Mason prepares to sign his national letter of intent, the excitement builds around his future at Ohio State. His journey reflects not only the family’s legacy but also the dedication and perseverance required to succeed at the highest levels of college football.

Ohio State fans can expect to see Mason Wilhelm donning the iconic scarlet and gray in the upcoming season, marking a new chapter in the Wilhelm family’s rich football heritage.
