URGENT UPDATE: A stunning exhibition featuring renowned 20th-century artists, including Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, and LS Lowry, has just opened in Bideford, North Devon. Titled ‘Into Abstraction: Modern British Art and the Landscape’, this major summer showcase runs until September 14, 2023, and entry is free.

The exhibition explores the critical intersection of abstraction and landscape in British art, spanning from the 1920s to the early 1970s. Organized in partnership with The Hepworth Wakefield, it draws from their extensive collection to reveal how artists responded to social upheaval through abstract expressionism, engaging deeply with the natural world.

“This exhibition helps us reflect on how abstraction has been used as a tool to explore the complexities of our landscapes,” said Harriet Cooper, director of The Burton at Bideford. This sentiment resonates strongly as society faces its own challenges today, underscoring the ongoing relevance of abstract art.

Visitors can expect to see works from over 40 notable artists, including Roger Fry, Duncan Grant, and Elisabeth Frink. The exhibition also highlights artists with local connections, such as Allin Braund, who was born in Northam, as well as Gillian Ayres and Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, both represented in The Burton’s permanent collection.

The showcase delves into themes of regionalism, class, and psychological anxiety, demonstrating how abstraction can provide a sense of redemption when realism falls short, especially during times of national crisis. As the art world evolves, this exhibition invites viewers to consider how these historical artistic movements continue to inspire modern creators in the region.

Organized with support from The Golsoncott Foundation and Little Greene Paint Company, ‘Into Abstraction’ is not just a display of art; it’s an invitation for local and international audiences to engage with the power and beauty of British landscapes through the lens of abstraction.

Don’t miss this opportunity to experience groundbreaking art that reflects societal shifts and individual experiences. For more details on the exhibition and accompanying events, visit https://www.burtonartgallery.co.uk.
