Major Renovations Enhance Terminal 1 at MSP Airport Now Complete
UPDATE: The largest interior renovation of Terminal 1 at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) is officially complete, delivering a stunning transformation just in time for the holiday travel rush. The $242 million project, a collaboration between the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) and Delta Air Lines, brings a unified and modern design to six of the airport’s seven concourses and 75 Delta gate hold rooms.
Renovations began in the fall of 2023, revolutionizing the passenger experience. With Delta holding a commanding 70% market share at MSP, this upgrade is crucial for enhancing customer service.
“Our goal was to elevate the passenger experience from the checkpoints to the gate areas,” said Brian Ryks, CEO of MAC. “In a matter of two years, we have witnessed a major transformation of the post-security areas of Terminal 1.”
Among the significant upgrades are new terrazzo or carpet flooring, modern wall finishes, and energy-efficient LED lighting fixtures. The terminal now features refreshed gate areas with improved seating, carpeting, counters, and signage. Notably, the installation of dynamic gate signs allows travelers to quickly access flight and destination information from further down the concourse.
These renovations coincide with the completion of the Airport Modernization Program, a decade-long effort to enhance pre-security areas, including ticketing, baggage claim, and security checkpoints. The MAC invested $182.5 million in this program, while Delta contributed $60 million.
As travelers flock to MSP for the holidays, the revamped Terminal 1 promises to provide a brighter, more efficient, and more welcoming environment. Authorities emphasize that these enhancements are designed to improve passenger flow and comfort, making MSP a top choice for holiday travel.
Stay tuned for more updates as MSP continues to evolve, ensuring that it meets the growing demands of air travel and enhances the overall experience for passengers.
