Lucas Paquetá Cleared of Spot-Fixing Charges, Returns to West Ham

BREAKING: West Ham midfielder Lucas Paquetá has been cleared of serious spot-fixing allegations, marking the end of a nearly two-year ordeal. West Ham manager Graham Potter confirmed that Paquetá will remain fully committed to the club as he prepares to return to action.
The Football Association had accused Paquetá of intentionally receiving yellow cards to manipulate betting markets, with a potential lifetime ban hanging over him. However, an independent commission ruled last week that four main charges were “not proven,” providing much-needed relief to both the player and the club.
The investigation was sparked by a yellow card Paquetá received during a Premier League match against Bournemouth in August 2023 and expanded to include three other matches against Leicester City, Aston Villa, and Leeds United. Notably, many suspicious bets, some up to $550, originated from Paquetá Island in Brazil, raising eyebrows due to its direct connection to the player.
“Since the first day of this investigation, I have maintained my innocence against these extremely serious accusations,” said Paquetá in an official statement. “I can’t say anything more at this time, but I would like to express how grateful I am to God and how eager I am to return to playing football with a smile on my face.”
Despite being cleared, Paquetá may still face a fine for failing to fully cooperate during the investigation, particularly for withholding information. The financial fallout from the scandal has been significant, with a potential $110 million transfer to Manchester City falling through due to the ongoing probe. Both Paquetá and West Ham are believed to have incurred costs nearing £1 million ($1.32 million) in legal fees, which they may seek to reclaim from the FA.
In a related development, a Senate inquiry in Brazil has recommended criminal charges against Paquetá’s uncle, Bruno Tolentino, for alleged involvement in organizing betting schemes. However, Brazilian prosecutors have declined to pursue charges against Paquetá himself, who has never been directly implicated.
Speaking from Atlanta ahead of West Ham’s upcoming match, Potter expressed relief at the news. “You never know for sure because anything can happen in the window,” he stated. “But the news is incredibly positive. If it had gone the other way, there would have been a whole other line of questions.”
Potter described Paquetá as “happy and committed,” emphasizing his importance to the team and the camaraderie he shares with fellow players. “We just want to help him enjoy his football,” he added, reflecting on the tough period the Brazilian player faced.
While Paquetá’s future at West Ham appears secure for now, fans remain on edge as the transfer window remains open until September 1. The rumors linking him to Manchester City continue to circulate, keeping supporters anxious about potential developments.
