UPDATE: Louisiana’s tourism industry is experiencing a dramatic rebound, with Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser leading a robust campaign to keep the state front and center for travelers. As international travel surges post-pandemic, Nungesser’s team is actively promoting Louisiana in major cities like Mumbai, New Delhi, Madrid, and Milan.

JUST ANNOUNCED: In a bid to capture the Canadian market, which represents 33 percent of Louisiana’s international tourism, Nungesser’s office will spend a week in Canada promoting the state’s rich French heritage. “Those Canadians love them some Louisiana,” he remarked during a recent Rotary Club meeting in Lake Charles.

In 2023, Louisiana welcomed an impressive 43 million visitors, generating $18.1 billion in spending—a notable 5.4 percent increase over the previous year. The state saw a remarkable 16.9 percent rise in international visitation, contributing an additional $1.7 billion in spending.

Nungesser highlighted how the state’s presence at international events, such as the alligator-themed float in the Rose Parade and hosting the Super Bowl in New Orleans, has raised awareness. “The return on investment for the Rose Parade has been incredible,” he stated, noting that media coverage from the event reached an astounding 10.4 billion people, valued at $144.9 million.

The Louisiana Office of Tourism is also enhancing its appeal through innovative marketing strategies, including wrapping taxi cabs in Paris as moving advertisements. Volunteer efforts have been instrumental in the success of these promotions, particularly in the Rose Parade, where local volunteers help decorate floats with natural materials.

In state parks, Nungesser reported major improvements since he took office nearly a decade ago. Seven parks were at risk of closure due to budget constraints, but with community support, they are now profitable and welcoming over 1.75 million visitors annually. He aims to create resort conference centers in these parks to attract business events, boosting local economies.

One standout park, Bogue Chitto, has become a hot spot for mountain biking, drawing visitors from 10-15 states monthly. Prime Video recently wrapped up a documentary on the trails, with 25 percent of the proceeds earmarked for further trail development.

Nungesser’s office also oversees nine museums in Louisiana, and he plans to introduce legislation ensuring all museums open on weekends. To promote state attractions, the office has launched LouisianaMuseums.com and is creating video content to showcase each museum.

In seafood legislation, recent laws require restaurants to clearly label imported seafood, ensuring diners know the source of their food. “We want people to ask before they eat,” Nungesser emphasized, aiming to protect local fishermen from competition with imported products.

The “Love the Boot Week” initiative has mobilized nearly 19,441 volunteers statewide, removing a record 347 tons of litter in 2024 alone. Nungesser’s team is committed to keeping Louisiana clean and beautiful, with plans to distribute trash collection buckets at marinas next month.

As Louisiana continues to reclaim its status as a premier travel destination, Nungesser’s efforts are paving the way for a vibrant tourism future. For more information on upcoming events and volunteer opportunities, visit explorelouisiana.com.
