Lorain County Voters RESOUNDINGLY Reject Sales Tax Increase

UPDATE: In a decisive move, Lorain County residents have overwhelmingly rejected a proposed sales tax increase during the November 4, 2025 general election. Unofficial results from the Lorain County Board of Elections reveal that 41,747 voters opposed the levy, while just 17,709 cast their ballots in favor.

The proposed increase would have raised the county’s sales tax rate from 6.5 percent to 6.75 percent, generating an estimated $13 million annually to support the Sheriff’s Office and potentially fund a new jail facility. Following the defeat, Lorain County Commission Vice President David Moore emphasized his commitment to “efficiency, accountability and stewardship” in managing taxpayer dollars and ensuring county government operates within its means.

Earlier this year, the Lorain County commissioners unanimously passed a resolution to place the sales tax increase on the ballot, citing concerns over a looming deficit in the general fund. The decision came after Sheriff Jack Hall and county officials reviewed budget projections for the upcoming year. They proposed restoring the sales tax, which had been eliminated by a previous administration prior to 2020.

Moore noted that the tax was not new, as it had been previously enacted. The funds were intended exclusively for the Sheriff’s Office, which comprises approximately 30 percent of the county’s General Fund budget. In a developing situation, the county has been assessing the conditions of its jail facility, determining whether to repair or replace it. Due to its antiquated state, officials are leaning towards constructing a new facility.

The rejection of the tax increase reflects residents’ growing concern over fiscal responsibility and government spending. As local officials regroup, the focus will shift to alternative solutions for addressing the county’s budgetary challenges.
