Local Nonprofits Launch Urgent Christmas Toy Drive in Vallejo
URGENT UPDATE: A festive toy drive and block party is set to take place in Vallejo on December 13, 2023. The 17th annual Christmas in the Crest event, hosted by the Neighborhood Hope Dealer and Help Others Prosper Eternally (HOPE), aims to spread Christmas cheer in one of the city’s most diverse neighborhoods. The community gathering will occur at Kings Supermarket from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and promises to uplift spirits during the holiday season.
The event is more than just a toy drive; it serves as a vital opportunity for community bonding. “The mindset of our mission is ‘No child left out’ — we just want to give a Christmas to children who absolutely have nothing,” said Word Smith, founder of the Neighborhood Hope Dealer. This year’s activities include bouncy houses, slides, and a new sports zone featuring inflatable football, basketball, and soccer games.
The excitement doesn’t stop there. Attendees can expect visits from beloved Christmas characters such as the Grinch and the gingerbread man, along with a surprise appearance by a local legend, as confirmed by Jameelah Hanif, CEO of Watch Me Grow Inc.. “It’s always a great vibe, great music,” she emphasized, highlighting the importance of community safety and enjoyment.
In preparation for the event, organizers collect toys year-round to ensure maximum impact. “It’s not just about the toy or the bike — it’s about a block party where we bring the spirit of Christmas to the neighborhood. It’s love,” explained Smith. With toy giveaways, music, and raffles planned, the event aims to engage the community at its heart.
The success of Christmas in the Crest is rooted in local involvement. “We’ve had it where the DJ was from the neighborhood, the artists were from the neighborhood, and everything came together like pieces to a puzzle,” Smith noted, underscoring the importance of collaboration. “It’s about building relationships,” he added, emphasizing that their efforts extend far beyond a single event.
Smith cautioned against “toxic charity,” stating, “It’s not just coming to a neighborhood, give away toys and then leave. We come in, engage, and build relationships.” These ongoing connections have allowed the organization to positively influence the community, fostering mentoring and additional events throughout the year.
As Christmas approaches, Smith reassured that the organization’s commitment remains strong: “We’ll be bringing joy one toy at a time.” The essence of the event lies in love and care for every individual, ensuring that the spirit of Christmas resonates deeply within the community.
Residents are encouraged to join in this heartwarming celebration that promises to bring joy and unity. Mark your calendars for December 13 and prepare for a day filled with laughter, community spirit, and holiday magic in Vallejo.
