Lib Dems Surge Ahead as Largest Group on Torridge Council
UPDATE: The Liberal Democrats have officially become the largest group on Torridge District Council following a decisive victory in the Winkleigh by-election held on December 4, 2023. This critical election was triggered by the resignation of Councillor Simon Newton, prompting local residents to head to the polls on Thursday.
In a strong showing, Stephen Middleton, the Liberal Democrat candidate, secured 325 votes, outpacing his closest rival, Michael Jarvis of Reform UK, who garnered 252 votes. Benjamin Roth from the Local Conservatives managed 191 votes. The overall voter turnout stood at 42%, highlighting significant community engagement in this pivotal election.
This victory increases the Liberal Democrats’ representation to 12 seats on the council, making them a third of the total councillors. However, they still fall short of an overall majority, intensifying the political landscape in the region.
Shortly after his election, Middleton expressed his gratitude, stating, “I am very honoured to have been elected as district councillor and grateful to the people of Winkleigh for their support. I look forward to serving as your councillor.” His commitment to the community is clear as he aims to address pressing local issues.
Teresa Tinsley, leader of the Liberal Democrat group on Torridge, emphasized the significance of this victory. “This is our third by-election win this year, following on from Appledore in March and Milton and Tamarside just weeks ago. The increased numbers put us in a better position to tackle issues blighting our communities such as lack of affordable housing, economic deprivation, and the impact of climate change,” she stated.
With a firm focus on the future, Middleton has outlined his initial priorities, particularly addressing the planning proposals for Winkleigh. He highlighted a pressing need for improved infrastructure, stating, “We have had massive expansion in recent years, but we’re not getting the infrastructure to go with it. There is no safe way to access the airfield from the village without a car, and there are huge concerns about road safety.”
His plans include advocating for better walking and cycling options, improved public transport, and enhanced broadband connectivity. Additionally, Middleton raised concerns regarding insufficient water treatment capacity, indicating a comprehensive approach to community needs.
This latest development not only shifts the dynamics of Torridge District Council but also reflects the growing influence of the Liberal Democrats in the region. As they gear up to implement their agenda, all eyes will be on how this new leadership addresses the challenges ahead.
Next Steps: The Liberal Democrats will likely focus on strategic initiatives to solidify their position and address community concerns. Residents can expect to see immediate actions from Middleton as he takes on his council responsibilities.
