Korean-American Community Honors Veterans at NH Ceremony

UPDATE: Over 200 attendees gathered today at the New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen to honor veterans of the Korean War in a poignant ceremony held by the local Korean-American community. This annual event, which has taken place since 2007, serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers from both South Korea and the United States during the conflict.
Participants, including families, children, and dignitaries, came together amid military flags, wreaths, and emotional tributes. The ceremony, characterized by an atmosphere of solidarity, highlighted the ongoing connection between the two nations amidst shared history. Speakers emphasized that although the Korean War ended in 1953, the memories and impacts of the conflict remain vivid, particularly for aging veterans present.
“We recognize the bravery of those who brought everlasting freedom to us all,” stated former New Hampshire Korean Veterans Association President Park Sun-woo, addressing the crowd solemnly. The event featured the exchange of remembrance gifts, performances of both national anthems, and recitations of pledges of allegiance, symbolizing the close ties forged through shared struggle.
Jaehui Kim, the consul general of the Republic of Korea in Boston, echoed this sentiment, stating, “Your courage was with us in our darkest hour and it has continued to inspire generations.” The somber atmosphere was interspersed with moments of reflection, as speakers recalled the sacrifices made, including over 137,000 South Korean soldiers who lost their lives and 37,000 U.S. troops who were killed during the war.
This year’s ceremony was particularly impactful, as it coincided with another event earlier in the day at the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton. Participants emphasized the importance of remembering the sacrifices made during what is often referred to as the “Forgotten War.” Senator Maggie Hassan remarked, “America answered the call to fight the forces of tyranny from the north, and together we demonstrated strength to the world.”
As the ceremony concluded, the crowd left with a renewed sense of appreciation for the veterans who served. The events today not only honored the past but also reinforced the ongoing commitment to remembering those who fought for freedom. The Korean-American community’s dedication to this remembrance serves as a vital reminder of the bond shared between the United States and South Korea.
WHAT’S NEXT: The Korean-American community plans to continue these remembrance ceremonies annually, ensuring that the sacrifices of veterans are never forgotten. As the nation reflects on its history, the legacy of the Korean War remains a critical part of the ongoing dialogue about freedom and service.
