UPDATE: Philadelphia Phillies reliever Jose Alvarado has issued a heartfelt apology to teammates and fans on Instagram as he nears the end of his 80-game suspension for violating MLB’s drug policy. The announcement comes just as the Phillies lead the National League Central by 1.5 games entering today’s action.

Alvarado, who tested positive for exogenous testosterone, acknowledged his mistake, stating, “I am fully aware that using prohibited substances is wrong and I would never intend to do so.” He emphasized his respect for the game and the impact of his actions on his organization and fans.

This apology arrives as Alvarado is set to return to the field, with eligibility for a minor league assignment beginning soon. He can officially rejoin the Phillies on August 19, although he will miss the postseason. The hard-throwing left-hander, with a record of 4-1, seven saves, and a 2.70 ERA in 20 appearances this season, expressed his commitment to working hard for the team’s success moving forward.

Alvarado’s suspension, which began on May 18, has significant financial implications, costing him $4.5 million—half of his $9 million salary for this year. He signed a $22 million, three-year contract in 2023, with the Phillies holding a $9 million option for 2026 that includes a $500,000 buyout.

Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski revealed that the positive test was linked to a weight-loss drug Alvarado took during the offseason. Manager Rob Thomson commented on the bullpen’s performance in Alvarado’s absence, saying, “We’ve won a lot of games without him,” but noted that Alvarado would bring “more energy and another really, really good arm” to the team.

As the Phillies continue their push towards the postseason, Alvarado’s return is eagerly anticipated. His performance could be a key factor in their success, adding depth and skill to a bullpen that has managed well in his absence.

Stay tuned for further updates on Alvarado’s progress and the impact of his return on the Phillies’ season.
