Join Friends of the Wissahickon for Urgent Tree Planting Days

URGENT UPDATE: Friends of the Wissahickon is calling for immediate community action as the October tree planting season is underway! Every Saturday this month, starting from October 4, volunteers will gather at various locations to plant thousands of native trees and shrubs, improving the ecological health of the Wissahickon area.
This initiative is crucial as it enhances air quality, combats greenhouse gas emissions, and even cools neighborhoods by up to 10 degrees. The community’s involvement is vital to foster habitats for local wildlife and protect the water quality of nearby streams.
Mark your calendars for these upcoming planting days:
– Saturday, October 4: 9 a.m. at Forbidden Drive and Thomas Mill Red Covered Bridge
– Saturday, October 11: 9 a.m. at Forbidden Drive and Kitchens Lane Bridge
– Saturday, October 18: 9 a.m. at Houston Playground
– Saturday, October 25: 9 a.m. at Hermitage Mansion (Costumes encouraged!)
These native trees, including red oaks, sugar maples, and white pines, not only beautify the Wissahickon but also serve essential ecological functions. Every tree planted acts as a riparian buffer, filtering runoff and contributing to healthier waterways.
Support from members directly impacts the Friends of the Wissahickon’s ability to implement sustainable solutions. By becoming a member, you will receive exclusive benefits such as a newly designed pocket map, discounts at local businesses like the Valley Green Inn, and more.
Friends of the Wissahickon emphasizes the importance of returning to these sites yearly to maintain the newly planted trees, ensuring they thrive and continue to provide essential benefits.
