UPDATE: The jewellery industry is in mourning following the passing of pioneering designer and silversmith Kit Heath, who founded the renowned Kit Heath Limited brand. The announcement was made yesterday, revealing that Heath died on September 26, 2023, after battling brain cancer.

Heath, aged 69, spent his final weeks at home, surrounded by his wife Lizzie and their four children: Annabel, Ollie, Alex, and Mimi. He was celebrated as a true trailblazer in the UK jewellery industry, known for his charisma and innovative spirit.

Founded in North Devon, Kit Heath Limited has grown into a prominent national and international wholesale business, with a legacy spanning over 40 years. Operating from Millennium House in Barnstaple, the company continues to be family-owned and thrives in the sterling silver jewellery market.

Kit developed his passion for metalwork at a young age, famously repurposing family silver candlesticks into original jewellery pieces. At just 18, he began his journey as a sales agent, discovering opportunities that many others overlooked. His ventures took him around the globe, sourcing materials from the Far East during a time of limited market access.

Initially selling to local gift shops and jewellers in a campervan, Kit’s first customer in North Devon was Carol Anne Jewellers, which he later purchased in his mid-20s. The business grew rapidly, leading to the establishment of a purpose-built headquarters in 1999.

In partnership with his sister Katie Nickell, Kit introduced exclusive designs that elevated retail customer service and solidified the Kit Heath brand’s reputation for high quality and timeless elegance. While Kit recently stepped back from day-to-day operations, Katie continues to guide the company’s evolution, ensuring it remains true to its roots.

As the jewellery trade community reflects on Kit’s legacy, the company expresses gratitude for the support received during this challenging time. For those wishing to share memories or condolences, an email can be directed to [email protected]. Cards may be sent to Millennium House, Roundswell, North Devon, EX31 3TD.

Family flowers only are requested; however, donations can be made to The Brain Tumour Charity and North Devon Hospice through WS Gayton & Son, the funeral directors handling arrangements.

As the industry honors Kit Heath’s contributions, many are left reflecting on the impact of his innovative spirit and dedication.
