UPDATE: Jacob’s Pillow has abruptly canceled the remainder of its 2025 summer dance festival following a tragic workplace accident that claimed the life of Kat Sirico, the center’s production manager. The incident occurred on August 1, and the esteemed dance institution in Becket, Massachusetts, made the announcement late Tuesday night.

The festival, which showcases top dancers from around the globe, was originally scheduled to run until August 24. However, in a statement released by the center, officials confirmed, “The Jacob’s Pillow Board of Trustees and institutional leadership has decided that Festival 2025 will not continue.” This decision reflects the profound impact of Sirico’s death on the community and the festival.

Sirico, a 40-year-old resident of Rochester, New York, was involved in a tragic accident while moving staging platforms with a summer intern. According to the Berkshire County District Attorney’s office, the two lost control of the dolly as they attempted to move it downhill. Sirico fell while trying to regain control and was subsequently run over by the platforms that fell off the dolly. Despite immediate life-saving efforts from bystanders, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The investigation determined that the events leading to the employee’s death were related to a workplace accident,” stated the district attorney’s office, confirming that no charges will be filed.

The nine-week festival had recently celebrated the reopening of the rebuilt Doris Duke Theatre, which was destroyed by a fire in 2020. As a result of the cancellation, all ticket holders will receive refunds.

This devastating incident has sent shockwaves through the dance community, drawing attention to safety protocols and worker protections in performance arts. The emotional toll on colleagues, attendees, and the broader artistic community is significant as they mourn the loss of a beloved figure.

As news spreads, the focus now shifts to the future of Jacob’s Pillow and its efforts to support its staff and community during this incredibly difficult time. Updates regarding the festival and other programming are anticipated in the coming days.

For those affected by the cancellation, officials advise checking the Jacob’s Pillow website for detailed refund procedures and further announcements.
