Illegal Bookmaker Sentenced to 1 Year Over Ohtani Scandal

UPDATE: In a groundbreaking development, Mathew Bowyer, an illegal bookmaker linked to former Los Angeles Dodgers interpreter Shohei Ohtani, has been sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison. U.S. District Judge John W. Holcomb announced the sentence today, emphasizing the serious nature of Bowyer’s crimes.
Bowyer, who pleaded guilty in August 2024, operated a large-scale gambling business, taking over 19,000 wagers and facilitating a staggering $41 million in losses for his clients. The court was informed that Bowyer’s operation had more than 700 clients over the years.
Judge Holcomb’s ruling included two years of supervised release and mandatory gambling addiction counseling, with Bowyer required to surrender to authorities by October 10, 2024. Before sentencing, he paid $1.6 million in restitution, highlighting the financial impact of his illegal activities.
The case gained notoriety due to its connections with Ohtani’s ex-interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, who allegedly stole nearly $17 million from Ohtani to cover gambling debts. Bowyer’s defense attorney, Kristin A. Williams, argued for home confinement, claiming that Bowyer’s crimes primarily victimized the government and that he was recovering from gambling addiction.
However, Assistant U.S. Attorney Williams emphasized the broader societal harm caused by Bowyer’s actions, stating, “This case is not just about an addict in trouble.” The court noted Bowyer’s media interactions and the notoriety he gained from the case, which raised concerns about accountability.
In a twist, Bowyer’s associate, Ryan Boyajian, known for his role in receiving wire transfers from Ohtani’s account, attended the sentencing. Boyajian has reportedly received immunity for his testimony.
Bowyer’s illegal gambling operation came to light after ESPN initiated inquiries into the suspicious transfers from Ohtani’s bank account, leading to Mizuhara’s exposure as a problem gambler. Mizuhara is currently serving a 57-month sentence at FCI Allenwood Low, a low-security prison in Pennsylvania.
This case not only reveals the darker side of sports gambling but also raises pressing questions about accountability within the industry. As Bowyer begins his prison term, the ramifications of these events are likely to resonate throughout the sports world for some time.
