URGENT UPDATE: A historic bronze plaque dedicated to Revolutionary War soldiers has been stolen from Ellis Woods Cemetery in East Coventry. The theft was first reported on August 28, 2023, around 2:30 PM, during a routine maintenance check by township public works.

Police Chief William Mossman is urgently calling on the community for assistance in recovering this significant piece of history. The plaque, which was dedicated in 1924 and tells the story of 17 soldiers buried in the cemetery, has been missing for at least two weeks leading up to its discovery. “The last time any of the public works staff remember seeing it was two weeks prior to the report,” Chief Mossman stated.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have seen the plaque recently to come forward. Residents can contact the non-emergency police number at 610-495-0119 or visit the township website at https://eastcoventry-pa.gov/ to submit tips. Chief Mossman believes that social media will play a crucial role in solving the case. “It’s such a unique piece that whoever stole it probably wanted it for their collection,” he remarked. “We need an internet sleuth to spot it in a photo or hear someone bragging about it.”

The plaque commemorates soldiers who were part of George Washington’s army camped at Valley Forge, emphasizing their sacrifices during the harsh winter of 1777-78. The inscription honors their commitment to the principles of equality and liberty, stating, “Honor their memory. The Ellis Woods Memorial Association.”

Authorities are exploring local pawn shops, yet Chief Mossman notes that selling such a distinctive item would likely require presenting identification, complicating the thief’s ability to profit from the theft.

This theft carries significant emotional weight for the community. According to Liz Willow, secretary of the Pottstown Joint Veterans Council, a ceremony is held each Memorial Day weekend to honor the soldiers buried at Ellis Woods. “I guess I’ll have to figure out some kind of fundraiser, especially if we want to replace it before the nation’s 250th birthday,” she expressed, highlighting the urgency to restore the plaque’s presence at the cemetery.

The Ellis Woods Cemetery holds deep historical significance, as it is the resting place for soldiers who fought for the foundation of the United States. Community members have previously gathered to honor these fallen heroes, placing flowers and flags at their graves during annual ceremonies.

As the investigation unfolds, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any sightings or information related to the stolen plaque. The community’s collective effort could be pivotal in recovering this irreplaceable piece of history and ensuring that the sacrifices of these Revolutionary War soldiers continue to be honored.

Stay tuned for more updates as this situation develops.
