UPDATE: In a stunning display of talent and determination, Great Bend’s Brogan Lashley and Hoisington’s Brody Rossman have made headlines at the latest cross country meet held at Lake Barton on September 30, 2023. Lashley finished in 16th place with a remarkable time of 16:58.84, slashing an impressive 1:43 off last year’s season opener.

Lashley expressed his excitement, stating, “Overall, it was a good race. My goal was to go under 17 minutes, a PR time.” The athlete highlighted a strong start with a first mile of 5:23 before pacing himself through the challenging course. “I kicked it back up the third mile and finished strong,” he added, attributing his success to rigorous off-season training and healthier eating habits.

Rossman also delivered a commendable performance, securing 28th place with a time of 17:42.29, improving by 75 seconds from last year’s effort. “I started out a little fast. It’s a hilly course,” Rossman noted. He explained how he focused on maintaining a steady rhythm, stating, “After halfway through, I leveled my pace and worked into a rhythm.” His dedication was evident as he passed several competitors in the final stretches of the race.

In addition to Lashley and Rossman, several athletes from St. John showcased steady progress, including Aaden Gonzalez (46th place, 18:00.17), who improved by 1:49, and Emmett Delp (92nd place, 19:26.1), who cut 1:31 off his time.

The competition results reveal that the Lake Barton course posed a formidable challenge, with teams like Wichita Carroll and SE Saline leading the pack. The top team scores were as follows: 1st place went to Wichita Carroll (65 points), followed by SE Saline (98 points) and Garden City (123 points).

TOP 10 MEDALISTS included Brody Deniston from Holcomb, who clinched 1st place with a time of 15:47.55, showcasing the fierce competition at this event.

The season is just getting started, and as athletes like Lashley and Rossman continue to push their limits, fans and supporters eagerly anticipate their performance at upcoming meets. This event marks a significant kickoff for the cross country season and sets a high bar for competitors across the region.
