Governor Newsom Signs Urgent Road Safety Bill to Protect Stranded Drivers
URGENT UPDATE: Governor Gavin Newsom has just signed Assembly Bill 390, a critical measure aimed at enhancing roadside safety for all stranded motorists in California. Authored by Assemblywoman Lori D. Wilson (D-Suisun City), this bill expands the state’s existing “Slow Down, Move Over” law, which previously only protected first responders and certain workers.
The newly enacted law now mandates that all drivers on the roadside with flashing hazard lights or emergency indicators receive protection. This legislation comes in response to alarming statistics showing a 60 percent increase in fatalities involving individuals outside disabled vehicles between 2013 and 2023, making California the second in the nation for such tragic incidents.
“This commonsense update reflects the real dangers people face when pulled over or stranded,” Assemblywoman Wilson stated in an official release. “I’m grateful to the Governor for signing this bill and to AAA for their partnership in getting it across the finish line.”
AB 390 is part of Wilson’s broader Transportation Safety Package, which has received strong bipartisan support throughout the legislative process.
