Georgia Farmers Celebrate Record Peanut Yields of 6,095 lbs/acre
URGENT UPDATE: Sixteen Georgia farmers are being celebrated for their impressive peanut yields, with numbers soaring as high as 6,095 pounds per acre. The recognition comes from the University of Georgia Peanut Team, highlighting the dedication and innovation within the state’s agriculture sector.
The awards ceremony took place in Tifton, Georgia, earlier this month, where farmers gathered to discuss their successful practices. The high yields, ranging from 4,145 to 6,095 pounds per acre, are tested against both irrigated and dryland farming conditions, demonstrating the farmers’ resilience and expertise.
According to Scott Monfort, a peanut agronomist with the University of Georgia Extension, the key to these remarkable yields lies in effective management strategies. “Many of the state winners combine their management strategies like crop rotation, variety, planting date, and critical timing of applications of pesticides to reach these high yields,” Monfort stated.
Farmers attribute their success to a combination of factors: quality seed selection, rotation practices with crops like cotton and corn, and optimal weather conditions. The majority of these top producers follow a rigorous three-year rotation plan and often choose the highly regarded Georgia-06G cultivar, alongside other varieties such as TifNV-HG and Georgia-12Y.
Among the awardees, Chase Farms in Macon County took top honors with the highest yield of 6,095 pounds per acre in the 100-299 acre category. Other notable winners include Reggie Bostick Sr. from Mitchell County with 6,058 pounds per acre and Stilson Farms from Bulloch County with 6,082 pounds per acre in the 300-699 acreage category.
As these farmers continue to break records, they emphasize the importance of following recommendations from the University Extension service and actively engaging in best practices. The ongoing commitment to improvement has led to consistent yield increases year after year.
