URGENT UPDATE: Gene Olaf Johnson, an esteemed resident of Charles City, has passed away at the age of 85. He died peacefully on November 3, 2025, surrounded by his loving children at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home.

The funeral service for Johnson will take place at 11 a.m. on November 10, 2025, at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home in Charles City, with Sister Diana Blong officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City. Visitation is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. until the start of the service.

Born on August 27, 1940, Johnson was a lifelong resident of Charles City. He was the son of Lawrence and Kathryn (Fods) Johnson. Gene dedicated his life to his family and community, marrying Christina “Chris” Emerson on November 26, 1966.

Johnson proudly worked as a GM mechanic at Bissonnette’s Chevrolet until its closure, then continued his career driving semi-trucks for Anthony Bill Trucking, and later hauling grain for Dennis Brinkman. He also served in the Floyd County Sheriff’s Reserves under Sheriff L.L. Lane.

His passion for the outdoors was evident in his love for pheasant and turkey hunting, fishing, and family camping trips. Gene was deeply devoted to his late wife, Chris, and took immense pride in his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, often sharing stories about them.

Gene is survived by his four children: Gina Meyer of Phoenix, AZ; Lon (Sarah) Johnson of Thornton, IA; Dawne (Brad) Bilharz; and Jacqueline Johnson, both from Charles City. He also leaves behind numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including Cody (Genevieve) Johnson, Nicholas Meyer, Tyler Johnson, and many more.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Chris; his parents; and brothers-in-law: Charles Kinney, Richard Tobin, and Carl Clopton.
