Gateway Arch Celebrates 60 Years: Iconic Monument Turns 60
UPDATE: The Gateway Arch in St. Louis is set to celebrate its 60th anniversary on October 28, 2025, marking a significant milestone for America’s smallest national park and tallest man-made monument. Standing at an impressive 630 feet, the arch is 75 feet taller than the Washington Monument and more than twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty, making it a must-see attraction for locals and tourists alike.

Construction began in 1963 and completed in 1965 at a cost of $15 million. The official opening of the north tram took place on July 24, 1967, allowing visitors to experience the arch’s breathtaking views firsthand.
Each tram ride, designed to accommodate 40 passengers, takes approximately 45-60 minutes, including a four-minute ascent, three-minute descent, and eight minutes at the summit. Passengers are advised to consider their comfort with heights and claustrophobia before boarding.
