Galveston ISD’s Special Programs Transform Lives Amid Crisis
UPDATE: In a remarkable display of community support, Galveston ISD’s Special Programs department has become a lifeline for families in need, as confirmed by parents and students. This urgent initiative, led by executive director Mary Simms Patrick, is helping transform lives amidst challenging circumstances.
Families like that of Tashona Bradford are expressing immense gratitude for the assistance they’ve received. “Words can’t express my appreciation. I’m forever grateful,” Bradford shared, highlighting how Patrick’s team provided critical help with groceries, rent, and even holiday gifts for her children.
Bradford, a survivor of domestic violence, relocated to Galveston just two and a half years ago, seeking safety and a fresh start. “I have to get away from here,” she recalled, recounting her harrowing past. With support from the Special Programs, her family is now thriving. “Now the kids are more comfortable and they feel happy about going to school,” she added.
The programs offered by Galveston ISD address a wide range of needs, from food insecurity to support for students in foster care. “We figure out what are the needs of the family,” Patrick said, emphasizing her passion for this work. This comprehensive approach ensures that no stone is left unturned in helping families achieve self-sufficiency.
Bryonna Mitchell, an 18-year-old student, echoed similar sentiments about Patrick’s unwavering support. “She’s like a second mom to me,” Mitchell said, revealing how Patrick actively checks on her and advocates for her success. Inspired by personal loss, Mitchell aims to become a traveling nurse to help others in need.
As the holiday season approaches, Patrick underscores the critical need for donations to support families who rely on school meals. “None of that will take place during holiday breaks,” she explained, highlighting the urgency of the upcoming ABC13 Share Your Holidays campaign. For 45 years, this initiative has partnered with the Houston Food Bank to ensure that families in Galveston County continue to receive food supplies, especially during winter breaks.
Bradford emphasizes the importance of sharing her story, stating, “If we would have never opened our mouth to say anything, y’all would have never known our story.” This transparency is crucial in raising awareness about available resources for those in similar situations.
The Galveston ISD Special Programs are not just about immediate relief; they aim to empower families for long-term success. Patrick’s team has also provided workwear and uniforms for students entering the workforce, ensuring they are equipped for success.
In this season of giving, the community’s support can make a significant impact. Donations can be made easily via text, online fundraising pages, or during the ABC13 broadcasts.
