URGENT UPDATE: David Randolph Page, the esteemed former managing editor of The Journal Record, has died at the age of 76. Page passed away on July 31, 2023, in Yukon, Oklahoma, after a lengthy illness, leaving behind a legacy that profoundly shaped Oklahoma journalism.

Born on April 8, 1949, in Nashville, Tennessee, Page’s journey in journalism began in Tennessee before he joined The Journal Record in May 1979. For over four decades, he played a pivotal role in mentoring aspiring journalists and steering the publication through pivotal moments, including the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, where he narrowly escaped with injuries from flying glass.

Page had stepped away from his desk for a coffee break just moments before the explosion, an act that may have saved his life. His office, now preserved at the Oklahoma City National Memorial Museum, honors him with the simple tribute: “Page survived.” Following the attack, Page’s leadership was instrumental in keeping The Journal Record in operation, as staff adapted to working with limited resources in borrowed spaces.

In recognition of his contributions to journalism, Page was inducted into the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame in 2011 and served as president of the Associated Press Oklahoma News Executives. His commitment to truth and accuracy was celebrated by many, including Ted Streuli, executive director of Oklahoma Watch, who stated, “David was the kind of journalist every newsroom needs. He was accurate and on time, but he also brought that rare combination of work ethic and wit that makes a newsroom thrive.”

Page’s passing is a significant loss to the journalism community. He is survived by his wife, June Page, daughter Mary Page Bailey, son Daniel Randolph Page, and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Nancy Lee Page.

A celebration of life will be held on August 8 at Yanda & Son Funeral Home in Yukon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Skyline Ministries to honor his memory.

Page’s impactful storytelling and unwavering dedication have left an indelible mark on the lives he touched and the stories he told. As the journalism community mourns, his legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations.

Stay tuned for updates on the celebration of life and tributes from colleagues and friends.
