Former Duncanville City Manager Dan D. Dodson Passes Away at 77
Dan D. Dodson, a respected figure in Texas public service and former City Manager of Duncanville, passed away on January 2, 2026, at the age of 77. His death, occurring at 01:45 a.m. in Austin, Texas, marks the end of a notable career that spanned over three decades in municipal management and public infrastructure.
Born and raised in Richland Hills, Texas, Dodson attended the University of Texas at Arlington, where he laid the foundation for his distinguished career. He served as City Manager in multiple municipalities, including Flower Mound and Jonestown, and held a prominent role as Deputy Director of the Texas Water Development Board. Throughout his career, he was particularly recognized for his expertise in municipal water rights and his unwavering integrity, earning him a reputation as a dedicated public servant.
A Legacy of Leadership and Community Engagement
Affectionately known as “The Captain,” Dodson was a natural leader who fostered camaraderie among colleagues and friends. He often referred to his close family and friends as “The 5th District,” assigning naval ranks to emphasize the bonds he nurtured. His legacy is reflected in the many who embraced the unique ranks he created, serving as a testament to his impactful leadership style.
Dodson’s passion extended beyond his professional life. He enjoyed boating on Lake Travis, hosting gatherings that became legendary among his friends and family. Known as “Captain Dan’s Tailgate Extravaganza” and “Captain Dan’s Bar and Bistro,” these events showcased his generous spirit, sense of humor, and love for storytelling, often enjoyed over his favorite drinks, including Miller Lite and Tommy Bloody.
A devoted student of military history, especially World War II and Vietnam, Dodson was also an avid gun enthusiast, regularly attending shows and expanding his own collection. However, it was his family that held the most significant place in his heart.
Family and Personal Connections
Dan Dodson is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Laurie F. Dodson. Their relationship blossomed while working together at Duncanville City Hall, culminating in their marriage in 1991. Their bond was characterized by deep affection and partnership, with Laurie describing him as her “Baby,” and Dan referring to her as his “Lady.”
In addition to Laurie, Dodson leaves behind his brother, David Dodson; his son, Andrew Dodson; his stepchildren, Richard Lane and Laurence Lane; and his grandchildren: Drew, Sam, Raegan, Haiden, and Fisher. To them, he will always be remembered as Dad and Papa.
Dan Dodson’s life was marked by service, humor, and loyalty, leaving an indelible impact on those around him. A private service for family and close friends will be held to honor his memory. The community mourns the loss of a dedicated leader and cherished friend, whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
