Former Des Moines Superintendent Arrested; Extensive Criminal History Revealed

UPDATE: The former superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools, Ian Roberts, was arrested by immigration authorities for living and working in the United States illegally. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) disclosed that Roberts has a troubling criminal history, including serious charges involving drugs and weapons possession.
Roberts, who resigned just days before his arrest, was taken into custody following a brief car chase. Officials confirmed he is charged with being an illegal alien in possession of firearms. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated, “Ian Andre Roberts, a criminal illegal alien with multiple weapons charges and a drug trafficking charge, should have never been able to work around children.”
During the arrest, Roberts was found carrying an illegal handgun, a hunting knife, and nearly $3,000 in cash. His resignation was unanimously accepted by the Des Moines Public Schools board in a swift 7-0 vote after determining he lacked the necessary work authorization.
Roberts has a long history of criminal offenses dating back to 1996, including a charge for possession of narcotics with intent to sell in New York. He also faced multiple weapon-related charges in 2020. His immigration record shows he entered the U.S. on a visitor visa, which expired years ago, and has had multiple green card applications denied.
THIS IS A DEVELOPING STORY. The implications of Roberts’ arrest raise significant concerns about school safety and the vetting processes for educators. As Roberts now faces serious legal repercussions, authorities emphasize the commitment to detain individuals posing risks to the community, especially around children.
As this situation unfolds, parents and community members are urgently seeking clarity on how such an individual was able to serve in a prominent educational role. The district has not yet responded to inquiries regarding their hiring practices and background checks for school administrators.
