A significant recall of frozen shrimp has been initiated across the United States due to potential contamination with a radioactive isotope. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall last week, affecting multiple brands, including Walmart’s Great Value shrimp and products from Southwind Foods, based in California.

On August 21, 2023, the FDA flagged approximately a dozen lots of frozen shrimp from Southwind Foods. The following day, on August 22, 2023, several lots of Walmart’s Great Value brand were also identified as potentially unsafe. Both brands utilized shrimp processed by PT Bahari Makmur Sejati, an Indonesian company operating under the name BMS Foods.

Consumers are urged to take immediate action. The FDA recommends that anyone who has purchased the affected shrimp dispose of them or return the products to the point of sale for a full refund. The agency advises against consuming or serving these shrimp as a precautionary measure.

The recall has raised concerns about food safety standards and the potential health risks associated with consuming contaminated seafood. The FDA, known for its rigorous monitoring of food products, emphasized the importance of consumer vigilance in this situation.

Retailers across the nation are expected to cooperate fully with the recall process, ensuring that any affected products are removed from shelves promptly. As investigations continue, the FDA has assured the public that it is working diligently to assess the situation and prevent any further distribution of the contaminated shrimp.

In light of this recall, consumers are encouraged to stay informed about food safety issues and to regularly check for updates from the FDA regarding their food products. The agency’s commitment to public health remains a priority as it navigates this incident and its implications for consumers nationwide.
