fda-ends-urgent-bread-recall-after-glass-fragments-found

UPDATE: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has **terminated a voluntary recall** affecting **800 bread products** after glass fragments were discovered in several varieties. This urgent action comes from Maryland-based **Upper Crust Bakery LP**, which initially issued the recall on **April 12, 2025**, for products distributed across **six states**: **Pennsylvania, California, Connecticut, Maryland, Delaware, and Ohio**.

The recall included three specific products: **Ancient Grains Hoagie Roll**, **Multigrain Sourdough**, and **Whole Grain Multigrain**. A team member found a glass fragment during routine checks, prompting immediate action. The FDA classified the recall as **Class II** on **April 25**, indicating potential temporary health risks from consuming the affected items.

The bakery, operating under the name **Crest Hill Bakery**, identified the source of the glass as sunflower seeds from **Magic Flame**, a supplier. **Upper Crust Bakery LP** swiftly ceased using these ingredients and conducted a thorough removal of the affected bread products from circulation.

Why This Matters: The FDA has warned that ingesting glass can lead to serious injuries, including **cuts, lacerations, and even intestinal perforation**. As a result, public awareness is critical.

For consumers, the FDA advises against consuming bread with the following lot numbers:
– **Ancient Grains Hoagie Roll**, 4 oz, Lot #90, **89 cases**
– **Multigrain Sourdough**, 18 oz, Lot #90, **699 cases**
– **Whole Grain Multigrain**, 20 oz, Lot #92, **30 cases**

These products were distributed frozen and should either be discarded or returned for a refund. Health experts strongly recommend contacting a healthcare provider if glass ingestion is suspected due to the risks of gastrointestinal injury.

In a statement, **Upper Crust Bakery LP** emphasized their commitment to safety:

“The recall was initiated after a vigilant team member discovered a small glass fragment on top of a piece of seeded bread. We remain steadfast in our commitment to upholding the highest standards of quality and safety in all our products.”

As of **July 15, 2025**, the FDA has officially ended the recall. Upper Crust Bakery LP has also amended its food safety protocols to prevent future incidents.
