URGENT UPDATE: Over 150 children in Newark received a festive surprise as local farmers distributed free supplies for Santa’s reindeer during the much-anticipated “Carrots for Rudolph” event. The giveaway took place on Saturday, December 20, from 10 AM to 1 PM at Newark Market Place, where families gathered for last-minute Christmas shopping.

Farmers from Newark, Farnsfield, Southwell, Kelham, and Sutton-on-Trent brought a tractor and trailer filled with goodies, delighting children and parents alike. The event aimed to spread holiday joy while promoting local agriculture. County NFU chairman Oliver Collingham of Combs Farm remarked, “From minute one we had children and parents wanting to take a carrot and hay for the reindeer.”

The enthusiasm was palpable as families lined up for bags filled with washed carrots and hay, designed to encourage children to engage with the spirit of the season. “We had to get more carrier bags from a neighboring market stall,” Collingham added, highlighting the overwhelming turnout.

This festive initiative not only provided a source of joy for local children but also fostered a connection between the community and the farmers who grow their food. Many young attendees interacted with the farmers, asking questions about agricultural practices and the importance of supporting British farming. “Many of the children sat on the tractor and wanted to ask various questions about farming, which our volunteers were happy to answer,” Collingham stated.

The success of this year’s event marks the second annual giveaway for Nottinghamshire farmers, inspired by a similar initiative in Staffordshire. “It’s something we’ll be looking to repeat or find ways to improve to make it an even lovelier experience in the future,” Collingham concluded.

As families prepare for Christmas Day, Newark’s community can take pride in supporting local agriculture while ensuring Santa’s reindeer are well-fed. The “Carrots for Rudolph” giveaway not only highlights the importance of local produce but also brings the community together in a festive celebration. This event is a shining example of how local farmers can spread cheer and education during the holiday season.
