Expanded Summer Job Program Empowers 92 Youth in West Michigan

BREAKING: An expanded summer job training program is transforming the lives of local youth in West Michigan, equipping them with essential career skills and confidence. The Ascend Youth Summer Work Experience (WEX) program, which concluded on August 1, 2023, successfully placed 92 participants with 40 local employers throughout the region, including SoZo Coffee Roasting in Grand Rapids.
Jacey Darrow, a participant in this year’s program, is a testament to its impact. She initially joined WEX to gain confidence and real-world experience. Just six weeks later, she secured a job at SoZo, where owners Rodney and Mindy Hensley offered her a permanent position after witnessing her growth. “Honestly, without the summer work program, I don’t think I would have been hired at SoZo,” Darrow stated, highlighting her newfound ability to engage with customers and handle phone calls—skills she never imagined mastering.
The WEX program, administered by West Michigan Works!, aimed to empower youth ages 16–24 with job training, soft skills development, and career exploration—all while earning a paycheck of $14 per hour. Due to overwhelming demand, the program increased its enrollment cap to just over 140 participants, nearly doubling last year’s acceptance of 76 youth.
Chad Patton, director of development and innovation at West Michigan Works!, emphasized the program’s goal: “Our goal is to create meaningful opportunities that prepare youth for success, whether that’s in college, a trade, or the workforce.” He noted that partnerships with local employers like SoZo offer invaluable real-world experiences that can be life-changing for participants.
WEX is designed to include a 20-hour weekly commitment, blending in-person work with virtual “WorkREADY” training during the program’s first week. Topics covered in the online training include career exploration and workplace problem-solving. For participants without reliable internet access, Ascend Youth Services provides support to ensure everyone can participate fully.
The program spans multiple industries, allowing youth to find placements that align with their skills and interests. This targeted approach not only fosters professional development but also nurtures essential life skills, which can be beneficial in any future career.
Darrow’s journey illustrates the program’s profound potential. Initially interested in becoming a veterinary technician, she found that the skills learned through the WEX program—communication, social interaction, and customer service—are universally applicable and crucial for her long-term goals.
As the summer program wraps up, the community is left to reflect on its success and the bright futures it has cultivated for many young individuals. With ongoing support from local businesses and the commitment of West Michigan Works!, the hope is to continue providing such transformative opportunities for youth in the region.
